“All these things intertwine,” offers Ndiaye. “When you’re on his team it’s more than winning the game, it’s more than winning a championship. It’s your own story. It’s allowing yourself to get a better life for you and your family.”
Ndiaye didn’t understand the methods at the time but now he sees that Coach Jake was in it for the long-haul. Ndiaye notes,“This is like a living experience for him. That’s how he builds his team. Soccer comes after. It becomes a means to go on and do everything you want to do.”
There’s plenty of fight left in Coach Jake. And competitors (some, Coach Jake says, refuse to match up against him) would relish seeing him throw in the whistle and collect Social Security. But the football maestro will stick around until he decides he’s ready to meditate in the mountains for good. “I imagine a lot of people want to see me retire,” he jokes, “But I’m around because I like going to work.” “Plus,” he adds “This year I have eight of my starters back so I know we’re going to be good.”
